Both teams traded chances early in the first period and while the United States nearly converted on a power play, Finland entered the first intermission with a 1-0 lead off a goal by Eeli Tolvanen.

Finland extended its lead to 2-0 with 4:29 left in the middle stanza when Sami Tavernier’s shot slipped past Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.). 

Foley brought the United States back within one 3:17 later when he back-handed a pass from Christian Fischer (Chicago, Ill.) for a power play goal.

Despite outshooting Finland, 14-5, in the final frame, the United States was unable to find the equalizing goal. Oettinger finished with 25 saves in the loss.

Sweden scored four first period goals to defeat Canada, 5-1, here today at the 2016 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

Sweden struck first just 1:58 into the first period when Linus Olund’s attempt trickled past Canada’s goalie, Carter Hart. 

Mathieu Joseph tied the game for Canada less than three minutes later, but Sweden regained the lead just :58 after that off a tap-in goal by Jonathan Dahlen.

Two more goals by Sweden within a two-minute span extended its lead to 4-1. Joel Eriksson-Ek connected first with 9:44 remaining when he tucked a shot under the crossbar while on the power play. Two minutes later, Marcus Davidsson fired a slap shot that deflected off a Canadian defender and in.

After a scoreless second period, Jonathan Davidsson registered an empty-net goal with 1:35 remaining to account for the 5-1 final. Swedish goaltender Felix Sandstorm finished with 37 saves in the victory.
