The World Changes But Our Support Never Wavers

Learn more about the Mitchel Kiefer Foundation and how you can help

In a normal year, USA Hockey Arena would have hosted the "Play With Purpose" charity hockey game in mid-August. As we have all been witness to, 2020 has been anything but normal.

But that doesn't mean our support for The Kiefer Foundation and raising awareness for distracted driving is stopping anytime soon. As we have rolled with the punches for the past six-plus months, we will continue to adapt to the new ways of today.

This year, The Kiefer Foundation, in conjunction with the League of Michigan Bicyclists (LBM) is going virtual and has organized a 'Ride for Mitchel' to continue the efforts to help end distracted driving. This means that during the month of September, members of Team Kiefer will each be committing to riding their bicycles 100 miles, wherever and whenever it works best, to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Bicyclists and pedestrians were involved in 1.2% of traffic crashes, yet represented 17% of fatalities in 2018 – a disproportionately high number compared to drivers. We know that distracted driving is a major cause of many of these crashes. The Kiefer Foundation is working with LBM to bring an end to distracted driving.

All funds raised during this event will be shared with the League of Michigan Bicyclists and benefit the mission to end distracted driving. USA Hockey Arena wants to show our continued support and help spread this message to as many people as possible.

How can you help? Get some exercise, enjoy the fall weather and ride your bikes! Ride throughout the rest of the month of September and donate your miles to help raise awareness and funds. You can join the team by clicking here to register. Be sure to take photos before or after your commute and share to social media!

Donations are also accepted to honor Mitchel and further the Kiefer Foundation's three pillars: Awareness, Policy and Technology. Click here to donate!

Today, (Sept. 19) marks four years since the tragic loss of Mitchel Kiefer in an auto accident caused by a distracted driver. Founded to honor Mitchel's legacy, the Kiefer Foundation's mission is to end distracted driving and all associated traffic deaths and injuries.

And please, always remember: Put your phone on ICE.
