USA, Finland Earn Wins on Day 1 of Five Nations

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - After Switzerland tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period, Finland reeled off three unanswered goals to go on to win 4-1 in the opening game of the 2022 U18 Five Nations at USA Hockey Arena.

Jesse Nurmi opened the scoring for Finland with the lone goal of the opening frame and the first of four consecutive power-play scores in the contest. 

Matteo Wagner evened the score for Switzerland on the man advantage, but Emil Kuusla and Arttu Alasiurua responded as Finland took a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Alasiurua iced the game with an empty-netter for the 4-1 final.

Finland's Jesse Kiiskinen finished the game with three helpers to be named the team's Player of the Game. Swiss netminder Ewan Huet made 24 saves to be named Switzerland's Player of the Game. 

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - In the nightcap, Team USA reeled off four consecutive goals in the second period en route to a 6-1 final over Czechia in both teams' first game of the Five Nations. 

The U.S. used impressive special teams to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd after the opening 20 minutes were goalless. Ryan Fine netted to open scoring on the power play and Oliver Moore went top-shelf on a breakaway while shorthanded to extend the USA lead. Aram Minnetian and Will Smith scored 30 seconds apart midway through the period to give USA a 4-0 lead. 

Czechia netted its lone goal before the close of the period from Samuel Fiala after a nice passing sequence to make it 4-1 after two periods. 

Kai Janviriya and Austin Burnevik added scores in the third period for Team USA as they skated to their first international win. 

Moore and Fiala were named each team's Players of the Game.
