Sweden and U.S. Open 2026 U17 Five Nations Tournament with Win

Sweden tops Finland, 5-3; USA beats Switzerland, 5-2

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Games wrapped on the first day of the 2026 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament from USA Hockey Arena with a 5-3 Sweden victory over Finland in the first contest of the tournament and Team USA besting Switzerland by a 5-2 count in the second half of the day's action.

Sweden 5, Finland 3

Sweden got out to a quick lead and netted the first goal of the tournament 1:41 in. A shot from the blue line by Yelverton Lindberg Steén soared through traffic and went past starting Finnish netminder Patrik Joensuu. Sweden didn't let up as it proceeded to score three more times to increase its lead to 4-0, capped off by a shot from the slot from Willie Andersson Johnk at 14:16.

Finland answered with one before the period ended as Frans Karjalahti converted on the rush and fired it past starting Swedish netminder Fabian Salasca Naas at 19:37.

Finland was the only team to light the lamp in the middle frame and tallied once at 1:14 off the blade of Niklas Helppi. Sweden answered at 3:11 of the third as Charlie Kalldin finished off a shorthanded breakaway to give Sweden a 5-2 lead.

Finland emptied its net with over 3:00 minutes to go and scored with :11 seconds to go but the comeback fell short as Sweden won the tournament opener, 5-3.

Salasca Naas finished with 21 saves to pick up the win, improving Team Sweden's record to 1-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L), while Joensuu had 16 in the Finnish net, and Team Finland fell to a 0-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in tournament play.

USA 5, Switzerland 2

The U.S. struck first as Easton Johnson tallied on the power play at 5:52. A pass bounced off the boards and fell on his tape before he fired on past starting Swiss goaltender Ayden Huet. Team USA rolled on and scored back-to-back highlight-reel goals as Finnegan Sears scored a 'Michigan' goal at 12:30, followed by a between-the-legs goals from Freddie Schneider at 17:01.

The U.S. tallied once more, with help from Gunnar Conboy, to head into the locker room up, 4-0.

Rocco Pelosi got in on the action and extended the lead to five after him and Brayden Willis sped into a two-on-zero opportunity, shorthanded, before Pelosi lasered it past Huet.

Noel Bosshard of Switzerland put his team on the board with a power-play tally at 16:56 of the second to make it a 5-1 game. Switzerland's Alessandro Domenichelli netted the team's second power-play goal of the night at 18:38, but Team USA went on to win, 5-2.

Eli Winters started in net for Team USA and finished with 14 saves to pick up the win, improving Team USA's record to 1-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L), while Huet had 24 in the Swiss net, and Team Switzerland fell to a 0-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in tournament play.
