U.S. Remains Unbeaten, Czechia Earns First Win in Second Day of U17 Five Nations Play

Czechia handles Sweden, 6-2; U.S. scores seven in win over Finland

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Games wrapped on day two of the 2026 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament from USA Hockey Arena as Czechia opened its tournament play with a 6-2 decision over Sweden, while Team USA added its second win in as many games with a 7-3 win over Finland.

Czechia 6, Sweden 2

The teams played to a stalemate for the first 16:14 of play until Czechia's Matyas Cancik found twine to break open the scoring. Cancik and Czechia didn't stop there though, as he assisted on a Michal Jordan goal at 19:22 to put the team ahead 2-0 after 20.

Sweden answered at 6:11 of the middle frame to cut its lead in half as Benjamin Nyström deflected a shot from Tom Bjurman. Czechia, though, responded 2:51 later with a Jakub Kyncl shot from inside the faceoff dot.

Czechia put itself up a trio of goals at 8:43 off a chance from Petr Hornig, but Olle Willén and Sweden responded 1:12 later with a power-play tally to make it 4-2. The two-goal deficit was short lived for Sweden as Patrik Polacek sped through the slot, made a move around a Swedish defender and slid it across the goal line. Czechia tallied once more to take its first game of the tournament, 6-2.

Krystof Stepanek finished with 17 saves to pick up Czechia first tournament win, improving its record to 1-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L), while Markus Broden had 18 in the Swedish net, along with two saves in 5:05 of ice time from Fabian Salasca Naas, as Team Sweden fell to a 1-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in tournament play.

USA 7, Finland 3

Team USA jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, all scored 2:17 apart with the latter three goals :41 seconds apart. Braden Horton netted a power-play goal after he corralled a rebound off the back board and put it past starting Finnish netminder Samuel Heikkinen. Kane Barch and Gunnar Conboy sped on a two-on-zero rush as Barch fed Conboy for the goal.

Freddie Schneider scored the following pair of goals with the first coming off the ensuing draw, and the next after he controlled the puck across the blue line and fired one home. Finland tallied its first of the game at 12:21 to cut into Team USA's lead and make it 4-1.

The U.S. continued on its scoring in the middle period as Rocco Pelosi found the stat sheet after he buried a backhand power-play goal at 13:23. Special teams came up once again as Finnegan Sears found twine at 17:10 while skating 5-on-3.

Finland budged into Team USA's lead as Luukas Haapala found the scoresheet to make it 6-2. Olli Kylmälä made it a three-goal game at 13:03 of the third, on the power play, after he finished off a one-timer from atop the faceoff circle. Barch capped off his three-point night with a goal at 19:05 as the U.S. won, 7-3.

Nate Chizik finished with 23 saves to pick up the win, improving Team USA's record to 2-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L), while Heikkinen had 27 in the Finnish net, and Team Finland fell to a 0-0-0-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in tournament play.
