U18s Host University of Michigan; The NTDP continues its USHL Slate

University of Michigan and Fargo Force coming to USA Hockey Arena

NTDP Notebook Week of Nov. 27- Dec. 3

USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program enters play this weekend with a 27-10-0-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) record after the U18s started the holiday week with an overtime victory against #2 ranked Division III opponent, Adrian College, 2-1 on Wednesday night (Nov. 22). The U18s fell 6-0 against Lake Superior State University at Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday night (Nov. 25). The U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped two USHL matchups over the weekend against the Sioux Falls Stampede, 6-3 on Friday night (Nov. 24) and the Omaha Lancers, 6-1 on Saturday night (Nov. 25).

The U17s open this week's slate of games by hosting the Fargo Force on Thursday night (Nov. 30) at USA Hockey Arena at 7 p.m. ET before traveling to Youngstown to face-off against the Phantoms on Friday night (Dec. 1) at 7:05 p.m. ET. The U18s host USHL opponent, Fargo Force on Friday night (Dec. 1) at 7 p.m. ET before welcoming the University of Michigan to USA Hockey Arena on Saturday night (Dec. 2) 7 p.m. ET.

WOLVERINES ON THE CLOCK: Saturday’s game marks the first time the Wolverines will travel to USA Hockey Arena and will be the first matchup outside of the confines of Yost Ice Arena.

In the last meeting, the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to the University of Michigan, 6-3 on November 18, 2016 at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jacob Tortora (2015-17/Boston College) netted two goals as Brady Tkachuk (2015-17/Boston University) added a goal and an assist. Current Wolverines, Josh Norris (2015-17/University of Michigan) and Quinn Hughes (2015-17/University of Michigan) put themselves on the score sheet. Norris recorded two assists  and Hughes added an assist.

Team USA’s last victory against the Wolverines was on December 5, 2013 as the NTDP earned an overtime victory thanks to Alex Tuch (2012-14/Vegas Golden Knights) who netted the game winner.

The Wolverines have ten current players who formerly wore the red, white and blue:  Nick Pastujov (2014-16), Quinn Hughes (2015-17), Michael Pastujov (2015-17), Will Lockwood (2014-16), Josh Norris (2015-17) and Luke Martin (2014-16) Griffin Luce (2014-16), James Sanchez (2014-16), Brendan Warren (2013-15), and Nicholas Boka (2013-15).

Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.Y.), Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) and John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) of the NTDP are currently committed to the University of Michigan.

ELIMINATING THE FORCE: This two game series will be the only time Team USA and the Fargo Force will face each other this season. Fargo is currently in first place in the Western Conference with a record of 12-5-1-1 in the USHL entering this weekend. Team USA trials in the all-time series 1-13-1 (W-L-OTL).

Team USA fell to the Force at Scheels Arena, 5-1 on (Mar. 31) and (Apr. 1).

BARRICADING THE PHANTOMS: This contest will be the third of nine meetings this season as Team USA travels to Youngstown. Youngstown is currently tied for first place with the Chicago Steel with a record of 9-5-2-1 in the USHL entering this weekend. The Phantoms have won its last four games but Team USA holds the 2017-18 season series 2-0-0 (W-L-OTL). The NTDP leads the all-time series 38-32-5 (W-L-OTL).

Team USA defeated the Phantoms in the first meeting, 5-4 on (Nov. 3) at USA Hockey Arena as Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) ended the game 2:05 into the overtime period after finding the back of the net. Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) and Jake Pivonka (Naperville, Ill.) picked up the assists. Team USA took game two, 8-5 at Covelli Centre on (Nov. 17) as Jack DeBoer  (Madison, N.J), Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) led the way with a goal and an assist each. The NTDP had eight different players score in total, 13 different players registered goals between Team USA and the Phantoms.

LAST WEEK’S WRAP UP: The U18s started the holiday week with an overtime victory against #2 ranked Division III opponent, Adrian College, 2-1 on Wednesday night (Nov. 22) thanks to Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) who wristed one past Adrian goaltender, Nikita Babintsev to end it in overtime. The U18s fell 6-0 against Lake Superior State University at Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday night (Nov. 25). The U18s record against collegiate opponents is now 3-5-0 (W-L-T).

The U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped two road USHL matchups over the weekend against Sioux Falls Stampede, 6-3 on Friday night (Nov. 24) and the Omaha Lancers, 6-1 on Saturday night (Nov. 25) completing the weekend. The U17s had goals from Danny Weight (Lattington, N.Y.), Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) and Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) against the Stampede on Friday night as Marshall Warren scored the lone goal for the U17s against the Omaha Lancers on Saturday night.

HUGHES RIDING SEVEN-GAME POINT STREAK: Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) is riding a seven-game USHL point streak after the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-17 Team played

the Omaha Lancers last Saturday (Nov. 24). The forward tallied an assist on a goal from Marshall Warren (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) and now sits with (3-11-14) in those seven games. The day before, Hughes recorded an assist in the U17s matchup with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Hughes also leads the USHL with 2.00 point-per-game and his 14 points put him in first place among league rookies.

He has recorded an assist in 16 of 19 games played this season. Hughes has played in 19 games for the NTDP and has scored 11 goals and 30 assists, making him the current points leader for the U17s with 41.

Top hockey players under the age of 18 from the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States will compete in a total of 10 games at USA Hockey Arena. This is one of the most heavily NHL scouted events as a majority of the players competing are eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP: NTDP alum and Anaheim Ducks draft pick Troy Terry (2014-15/ University of Denver) is second in the nation in points in the NCAA with 23 (7-16-23) in 12 games. His 16 assists also put him in third place overall in assist leaders.

Former NTDP defensemen Chad Krys (2014-16/Boston University), Max GIldon (2015-17/University of New Hampshire) and Louie Belpedio (2012-14/Miami University) all rank in the top 20 in scoring among defensemen. Belpedio is ranked fourth with 14 points (5-9-14) in 14 games played. Krys is eighth with (3-10-13) in 15 games played. Gildon is 17th with 11 points (6-5-11) in 12 games.

Four of last year’s U18s group (1999 birth year) currently rank in the top 25 in points-per-game by Division I freshmen. Gildon, Grant Mismash (2015-17/University of North Dakota), Logan Hutsko (2015-17/Boston College) and Quinn Hughes (2015-17/University) have started their collegiate careers by averaging more than .70 points/game. Gildon leads the group with six goals and five assists through 12 games (.92 points/game).

MINORS HIGHLIGHTS: Jack Roslovic (2013-15/Winnipeg Jets) currently ranks third in AHL scoring (11-11-22) through 21 games with the Manitoba Moose.

ALUMNI NHL UPDATE: U.S. National Team Development Program alum and current Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk (2010-12) scored his first NHL goal in the Bruins' 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last Friday (Nov.24).

Clayton Keller (2014-16) leads the way for NTDP rookies in their NHL campaigns. The Arizona Coyotes forward currently has a rookie-leading 11 goals and nine assists for  20 points. He leads rookies in shots on goal with 78 through 26 games played. Keller earned October Rookie of the Month Honors.

Will Butcher (2011-13/New Jersey Devils) is currently ranked second in assists among rookies, recording 16 in 24 games. He has been exceptional on the power play, recording 10 power play points, which comes in second among NHL rookies.

Auston Matthews (2013-15/ Toronto Maple Leafs) is in fifth place among plus-minus leaders with +13. The Arizona native celebrated his 100th NHL on Monday Nov. 20.

Phil Kessel (2003-05/ Pittsburgh Penguins) ranks 5th in points with 32 (11-21-232) through 26 games.

Jason Zucker (2008-10) is enjoying a solid campaign with the Minnesota Wild. He is currently tied for ninth in goals with 13 through 24 games. Zucker’s goals have come in bunches, recording seven goals in a five-game stretch between Nov. 8-16, including a hat-trick performance against Montreal on Nov. 9.

U18S NCAA SCHEDULE: The U.S. National Under-18 Team will skate in 15 NCAA games this season, including 11 tilts with Division I squads. The U18s record sits at 3-5-0 (W-L-T) against collegiate opponents. The U18s defeated Division III opponent, Adrian College (Nov. 22), 2-1 (OT).
