USA Hockey Arena Set for 2018 North American PowerHockey Cup

Michigan Mustangs host tournament set for July 10-13

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - USA Hockey Arena, in partnership with the Michigan Mustangs PowerHockey Club, will host the 2018 North American PowerHockey Cup at USA Hockey Arena starting next Tuesday, July 10.

The four-day tournament will be held in the Mitchel Kieffer Memorial Rink at USA Hockey Arena July 10-13.

“We are excited to bring this event to USA Hockey Arena,” said Mike Henry, general manager of USA Hockey Arena. “Everyone involved with this event from the organizers to the staff has a pure love for the game of hockey and we couldn’t be more grateful that USA Hockey Arena is the place is where this tournament will be held.”

The bi-annual tournament will determine the 2018 North American PowerHockey Cup champion, and features teams from Canada and the United States, including clubs from Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Philadelphia, Michigan, and the defending champions from Minnesota. During alternate years, U.S. teams participate in the United States PowerHockey Championship.

The Michigan Mustangs, are a PowerHockey travel club team who represent a Michigan-based wheelchair hockey league. They were the inaugural champions in 2009, have won silver medals in two North American PowerHockey Cups and previously hosted the 2015 United States PowerHockey Championship that was also held at USA Hockey Arena.

“This year we have the privilege to host the PowerHockey Cup at USA Hockey Arena,” said Dean Olivas, junior captain of the Michigan Mustangs. “As a native of Michigan, I've been coming to this arena since I was a little kid. It means a lot to me to be able to bring the sport that I'm so passionate about to the arena. It's going to be an incredibly competitive tournament, with all teams having a chance to win gold.”

PowerHockey is the sport of wheelchair floor hockey based on the use of electrically-powered wheelchairs combined with modified ice hockey rules to enable a fast-paced, competitive hockey game.
