Learn to Skate

LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAM

From the first steps on the ice to mastering advanced techniques, Learn To Skate is the right start for everyone.

USA Hockey Arena is excited to offer a new curriculum called Learn to Skate USA. The program, endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey, US Speedskating, the Professional Skaters Association (PSA) and the Special Olympics, empowers aspiring skaters to achieve athletic and personal goals on and off the ice while providing a fun and positive experience.


SCHEDULE

  • Tuesdays 10:10-11:00am
  • Wednesdays 5:10-6:00pm
  • Thursdays 10:10-11:00am

Arena has the right to cancel/combine classes if enrollment numbers are low. You may be asked to join a different day. If you are unable to join the alternate day, you will receive a full refund.

    • April 24 - June 16
    • $120, 8 weeks
    • * No session on 5/26/18
  • Session 6 
    • July 10 - August 23
    • $105, 7 weeks

How to Register

  • Call USA Hockey Arena Office at 734-453-8400 to register today! 
  • Registration deadline: Friday before classes start
  • Late registrations and cancellations made prior to the first class will be subject to a $15 administrative fee. 
  • Full payment is required at time of registration to hold a spot in a class. 
  • Cash, Check, and all Major Credit Cards Accepted.
*Family Discounts available, $10 off per additional skater registered
*Skate More, Save More!  Register same skater for 2 classes, receive 50% off the second class 
*Discounts cannot be combined, largest discount will be applied

 


WHAT TO EXPECT

  • 25 minutes Formal Class
  • 25 minutes Supervised Free Skate

On the first day:  Skaters will be checked in in the main lobby and will receive a name tag and helmet color sticker indicating where to meet their coach.  

Parents will be expected to watch from the stands.  Parents are not permitted on the ice or on the player benches.  

At the end of each session, skaters will receive an evaluation form marking their progress.  Completion badges can be purchased at front desk for $1

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Warm layers with freedom for movement
  • Gloves or Mittens
  • Helmets are mandatory for all Snowplow Sam Levels, Basic 1-2, Hockey, & Adult Levels
  • Securely tied skates, laces should be snug at ankle & allow for flexibility above ankle 

Determining Skill Level

CLASS AGE/TEST REQUIREMENT
SNOWPLOW SAM 1-4 AGES 3 TO 5 ARE PLACED IN THE TOTS PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO HELP PRESCHOOL AGE CHILDREN TO DEVELOP THE PRELIMINARY COORDINATION AND STRENGTH NECESSARY TO MANEUVER ON SKATES. THE TOTS HAS 3 PROGRESSIVE LEVELS THAT WILL HELP THE YOUNG SKATER DEVELOP CONFIDENCE WHILE EXPERIENCING SUCCESS WITH HIS OR HER BEGINNING SKATING. ONCE A SKATER HAS COMPLETED SNOWPLOW SAM 4 THEY CAN TAKE BASIC 2 OR HOCKEY 1.
BASIC 1-6 BEGINNING SKATERS, AGES 6 TO 14, ARE INTRODUCED TO THE BASIC SKATING TECHNIQUES IN A SAFE AND CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. EACH CLASS SESSION AND LEVEL FOLLOWING BASIC 1 IS PROGRESSIVE, BUILDING UPON SKILLS TAUGHT IN THE PREVIOUS LEVEL.
FREESTYLE 1-6 SKATERS GRADUATING FROM BASIC 8 CAN TAKE FREE SKATE 1 CLASS. FREE SKATE CLASSES WILL INTRODUCE SKATERS TO PROPER JUMPING AND SPINNING TECHNIQUES AS WELL AS US FIGURE SKATING MOVES IN THE FIELD. EACH CLASS LEVEL IS PROGRESSIVE, BUILDING UPON SKILLS TAUGHT IN THE PREVIOUS LEVEL.
HOCKEY 1-4 BEGINNING SKATERS, AGES 5-14, ARE INTRODUCED TO THE BASIC HOCKEY SKATING TECHNIQUES. AGES 3-5 MUST FIRST COMPLETE SNOWPLOW SAM LEVELS 1-3. EACH CLASS SESSION AND LEVEL FOLLOWING HOCKEY 1 IS PROGRESSIVE, BUILDING UPON SKILLS TAUGHT IN THE PREVIOUS LEVEL. LEARN TO SKATE HOCKEY CLASSES PREPARE PARTICIPANTS FOR COMPUWARE’S LEARN TO PLAY PROGRAM.
ADULT 1-6 INSTRUCTION IS IN RECREATIONAL SKATING. EACH CLASS SESSION IS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL FITNESS, IMPROVE BALANCE AND COORDINATION WHILE LEARNING PROPER SKATING TECHNIQUES.
